Stop Trying to Lead Like a Man: Why Feminine Leadership Is the Future

I hadn’t realised how masculine my leadership approach was back in my corporate days, manning up to be accepted. I learned the rules and spoke assertively and more loudly in meetings, projecting certainty even when my gut was whispering something else entirely. I held back tears and faked confidence when I felt uncomfortable, and I became fluent in a language that was never really mine. It worked. I got the promotions, the career, and a seat at the table.

Does that ring true for you?

I wasn’t an imposter, but I was certainly performing in a world not really welcoming my true, authentic leadership strength. I did use them all, just secretly, softly, minimising the feminine power within.

I mastered the tough, armoured version of myself. I pushed myself, showed confidence, assertiveness and decisiveness and moved quickly with certainty. What was the leader I had become… honestly, I had become a male leader.

So listen up, it’s time to stop performing a version of leadership that was never designed for you, and to reclaim the one that has been yours all along.

The table wasn’t built for you, so now we extend it or create a new one.

For most of the last century, leadership meant command and control. Managers mobilised their teams through hierarchy, structure and instruction. You did what you were told, and you told others what to do. Strength looked like certainty. Power looked like distance. Vulnerability looked like weakness.

Women make up half the workforce, yet only around a third hold senior leadership roles. And the training we’re offered? Too often it follows a one-size-fits-all model, rooted in those same outdated, male-centred ideas of what a leader should be. We’ve inherited the blueprint of a system that measures performance by who is loudest, most visible, most available, rather than who builds the strongest teams or leads with the most wisdom.

No wonder so many brilliant women feel exhausted. You’ve been asked to reshape yourself to fit in, rather than being invited to design something new for all.

The system needs to change. And you are who we have been waiting for.

Your “Soft Skills” Are Actually Strategic Superpowers

Let’s retire a phrase, shall we? “Soft skills.”

The word “soft” has done enormous damage. It whispers that empathy, intuition, care and connection are the gentle extras, the nice-to-haves you bring out once the real work is done. It’s a quiet way of saying these things don’t count.

They count. They may be the only things that truly count.

Intuition, that knowing before the evidence arrives, is not magic and it’s not fluff. It’s your brain reading the room faster than your conscious mind can keep up. It’s you sensing what hasn’t been said, what isn’t yet seen, what no one has dared to name. A mother often senses when something is wrong with her child before a single word is spoken. That same deep attunement, applied to a team, a boardroom, a business, is a competitive advantage most companies don’t even know they’re missing.

Empathy is not weakness. It’s the ability to understand what your people actually need, then lead them there. That is a power, a strength that has a lasting impact and affects the outcomes.

And another strength, nurturing. That takes a lot of time, effort, and energy and is absolutely not coddling. It’s building the conditions where talented people grow into their fullest capabilities. Who wouldn’t want to lead people who are capable of great things, to know that you are a part of someone else’s growth and success?

And then there is the strength of team building, community-building, which takes emotional, mental, and time investment. It is a performance accelerator and a strategic choice. Now, the female leader, with permission to be her whole self, does this brilliantly and gets results, because teams that trust each other outperform teams that fear each other, every single time.

Relational intelligence, the art of forming genuine bonds and reading the human currents beneath the surface, is exactly what 21st-century leadership demands. The generations rising up behind you don’t want to be commanded. They want to be trusted, developed and cared for. They want purpose. They want to feel that someone at work sees them as a whole person.

This is not the softer path. This is the smarter one.

The Evidence Is In, and It’s on Your Side

If your conditioned inner sceptic is still muttering that this all sounds lovely but a little too warm and fuzzy, good. Let’s bring the data.

Gallup studied more than 10 million employees. They asked people to respond to a simple statement: “My supervisor, or someone at work, cares about me as a person.” The employees who agreed weren’t just happier. They were the top performers, by nearly every measure that matters. More productive. More loyal. More engaged.

Care drives performance. But you are human, you have experienced it, you know this to be true. And women, on the whole, are extraordinarily good at making people feel genuinely seen.

Now let’s look inside the brain, because the story there is fascinating too.

On average, the female brain shows a proportionally larger hippocampus relative to total brain volume than the male brain. The hippocampus is central to memory and learning, which may help explain why women tend to outperform men on verbal memory tasks in controlled studies. There’s real biology beneath your ability to remember the detail, connect the dots and hold the fuller picture.

A word of honesty here, because you deserve nothing less. The overlap between male and female brains is far greater than the difference. Most of us carry what researchers call a mosaic, a blend of traits that don’t follow neat lines of sex at all. This isn’t about women being from one planet and men from another. It’s about honouring a set of strengths that our workplaces have long ignored, wherever they show up and in whoever carries them. Yet, the differences, as a result of biology, matter.

Oestrogen is a remarkable set of hormones changing the brain and how it works. When your oestrogen is high, remarkable things happen. Your memory sharpens. You regulate emotion and threat more skilfully. Your decision-making strengthens and your impulse control steadies. This hormone has been quietly supporting your cognitive brilliance for decades, and hardly anyone ever told you.

The Menopause Truth No One Warns You About

Let’s talk about the part that gets whispered, if it’s spoken of at all.

For a few years, as oestrogen begins to dip, those very skills can fluctuate. Your memory might feel less reliable. Your emotional weather may shift without warning. Words vanish mid-sentence. Decisions that once felt effortless suddenly feel foggy.

If you’re in this season now, hear me clearly. You are not losing yourself. You are not failing. You are not “too much” or “not enough.” You are moving through a profound transition, and the exhaustion you feel is real, not a character flaw.

This is where so many talented women quietly conclude they’re finished. They compare themselves to a younger, sharper version of who they used to be and decide they no longer belong. They walk away just before the most powerful chapter begins.

Because here is what happens on the other side.

Your brain remembers. The maternal instinct, that deep relational knowing, remains. The empathy stays. The intuition stays. The decades of pattern recognition, of reading people, of holding complexity, all of it stays. The fog lifts, and what emerges is not a diminished leader but a distilled one. Sharper. More intentional. More boundaried, and not driven by people pleasing, but by purpose. You become more decisive and follow your inner wisdom, boundless experience, and intuition. You become less interested in proving yourself, and far more interested in building something that matters.

Think of it as a forest after a wildfire. For a time, everything looks scorched and uncertain. Then the new growth arrives, stronger and more deliberate, rooted in soil made richer by everything that came before. Menopause is not the end of your leadership. It’s the clearing that makes room for the wisest version of you.

The World Is Waiting for Your Kind of Leader

So this is my invitation to you.

Stop trying to lead like a man. Not because there’s anything wrong with men, but because there is everything right with you, exactly as you are. You are hormonally and cognitively wired to be heart-brained. To build community. To lead with relational intelligence, empathy, nurturing and intuition. To sense what isn’t spoken, seen, or yet validated. To know before the evidence arrives.

These are not the qualities that hold you back. These are the qualities the future desperately needs.

Picture it. Companies where people feel truly cared for, and perform all the better for it. Boardrooms shaped by wisdom rather than volume. Teams built on trust instead of fear. Leadership that finally makes room for the whole human being, and the whole human being who leads them.

You don’t have to renovate yourself to fit the old house any longer. You get to build a new one.

So bring your heart and your sharp mind. Bring your intuition and your intelligence. Stop apologising for the very gifts that make you extraordinary, and start leading from them.

The world doesn’t need one more woman performing masculinity to survive.

It needs you. The real you. Rising.
