Centering Women Isn’t Excluding Men

I had a brilliant conversation with a friend recently that made me realise there’s still a lot of misunderstanding about what we mean when we talk about patriarchy, matriarchy, and the call to centre women.

She shared a concern that I’ve heard many times before.

“The problem with centering women,” she said, “is that it makes men feel like they don’t matter.”

Now, this is a woman I deeply admire. She’s a mother of two daughters. She has a wonderful husband who is an ally in every sense. he manages a team of brilliant women, is emotionally intelligent, and leads with compassion and integrity. He’s the kind of leader we need more of.

So when she shared this concern, I didn’t dismiss it. I listened, and I thought, “This is exactly why we need to keep having this conversation.”

Because centering women doesn’t mean excluding men.

It doesn’t mean men are bad or wrong or irrelevant. It doesn’t mean we want to reverse the power dynamic and create a matriarchy that dominates in the way patriarchy has. That’s not the vision.

What we want and why Wise Women Lead is here is to shift the focus onto women, just long enough and strong enough to create true equity.

We still live in a world largely built around men’s experiences. Patriarchal systems prioritise male voices, whether in leadership, research, workplace norms, or even personal development spaces.

Women have learned how to operate in these systems. We’ve read the books written by men, attended the trainings designed for men, and absorbed leadership models shaped by masculine values. And we’ve done a damn good job of surviving in that world.

But now, it’s time to create spaces where women can thrive, where women’s voices, experiences, and ways of leading are centred, honoured, and nurtured.

This doesn’t mean we’re rejecting men. We’re just saying: women deserve to grow in a space designed for them.

Historically, women gathered in circles to share, support, and empower each other. But in modern times, we’ve been shaped by systems that weren’t made with us in mind. It’s time we reclaimed our development on our terms, in our rhythm, and with our wisdom.

That’s what Wise Women Lead is about. We take everything women have learned from navigating the masculine world and add something more: a leadership journey rooted in the feminine, in balance, and in wholeness.

And no, decentering men isn’t about replacing them. It’s about making space for women to centre themselves.

So, to all the brilliant men out there, like my friend’s husband, this isn’t about making you less. It’s about making sure women don’t have to be less in order to lead.

When women rise as women, the whole world rises with us.
